Title: Debating the World: Highlights from the International English Olympiad‘s Debate Competition
The 2022 International English Olympiad (IEO) was held in Hyderabad, India, recently, and with it, a thrilling debate competition that brought together some of the brightest young minds from around the world. The theme of the competition was “Environmental Sustainability: Does it come at the cost of Economic Development?”, a topic that sparked lively and thought-provoking discussions.
The debate competition saw teams of students from across the globe gather to engage in a battle of wits, logic, and eloquence. The event, organized by the International English Olympiad, drew participants from Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Americas. The competition aimed to promote effective communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills among students, while also addressing pressing global concerns.
The Debate Competition
The debate competition comprised two rounds. In the preliminary round, 16 teams with four students each were given topics and asked to prepare their speeches within a specific time frame. The teams had to present two speeches each: one for and one against the motion. Judges evaluated the students’ performances, taking into account factors such as content, logical reasoning, creativity, and speaking skills.
The top four teams from the preliminary round advanced to the final round, where they were given the topic “Freedom of Speech in the Digital Age: A Tool for Empowerment or An Endangerment of Society?” Again, each team had to deliver two speeches – one for and one against the motion. This round was broadcast live, providing an opportunity for a wider audience to witness the intellectual fireworks unfolding on stage.
Highlights from the Competition
Several teams impressed with their exceptional speeches, clever counterarguments, and effective rebuttals. From the United Kingdom, the Manchester Grammar School presented a strong argument in favor of freedom of speech, citing historical examples of marginalized groups using this right to promote social change.
In contrast, the Singapore Chinese Girls’ School opposed the motion, highlighting the devastating consequences of unrestricted online speech on mental health, social cohesion, and the dignity of individuals.
The team from the Indian Public School, Kolkata, wowed the audience with their innovative presentation style, which included dramatic interpretations and visual aids. They proposed a nuanced solution, suggesting the need for greater regulation and online literacy education.
The Korean Team from Seoul Science High School argued that freedom of speech is an essential right in the digital age, but should be balanced with the need to protect vulnerable communities from online abuse and harassment.
Judges’ Verdict
After deliberations, the judges announced the winning team: Team India from the Indian Public School, Kolkata! The team took home the gold medal, earning praise for their well-structured arguments, exceptional delivery, and creative presentation. The silver and bronze medals were awarded to teams from the Singapore Chinese Girls’ School and Manchester Grammar School, respectively.
