The world of English language and literature is abuzz with excitement as students from around the globe gathered to showcase their linguistic prowess in the International English Olympiad (IEO). This prestigious competition, now in its 10th edition, has become a coveted platform for young minds to demonstrate their mastery of the English language.

The IEO, organized by the English Language Teachers’ Association (ELTA), India, attracted a record number of participants from over 20 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and India. The competition, held recently in New Delhi, India, saw students from diverse educational backgrounds and age groups, from 12 to 18 years, participating in various events.

The events, designed to test students’ language skills, creative writing, and critical thinking, included:

1. Reading Comprehension: Students were required to read and analyze a given passage, followed by a written comprehension test.
2. Writing: Participants were asked to write an essay on a given topic, showcasing their ability to express themselves effectively in written English.
3. Vocabulary: Students had to identify and define obscure words, demonstrating their grasp of English vocabulary.

The competition was fierce, with students from top-notch schools and universities from around the world vying for the top spots. Despite the stiff competition, several students from India, including the eventual winners, stole the show with their outstanding performances.

Winners and Runners-up

The winners of the IEO 2023 were announced at a grand ceremony, with students from India, the United States, and the United Kingdom taking home the top prizes.

• Gold Medalist: Raghav Pandey, a 17-year-old student from The Doon School, India, won the gold medal in the Senior Category for his outstanding performance in all four events.
• Silver Medalist: Aarav Jain, a 15-year-old student from The American Embassy School, India, took home the silver medal for his impressive showing in the Senior Category.
• Bronze Medalist: Sofia Patel, a 13-year-old student from The International School of India, India, won the bronze medal in the Junior Category for her remarkable performance in the events.
