Course description

This book focuses on helping kindergarten kids develop reading fluency, which means reading out loud smoothly, quickly, and with expression. It explains that fluency is more than just sounding out words—it's also about understanding and enjoying what you read. It begins by explaining the basics like letter names and sounds, and then builds on that with phonemic awareness, segmenting and blending sounds, and using chants and poems to make reading fun.

There are step-by-step fluency-building techniques using charts, letter races, songs, rhymes, and movement-based activities that grab kids' attention. It emphasizes oral learning instead of traditional worksheets and encourages repeated, playful practice. There’s also a strong focus on assessment through informal and formal means, so teachers or parents can track a child’s progress. Later parts of the book dive into vocabulary development, story retelling, and using reading aloud to build fluency.

In the second half, it’s filled with child-friendly poems and rhymes that are linked with creative follow-up activities—from drawing to acting to movement games—all designed to build literacy skills naturally. The book wraps up with helpful methods for strengthening oral vocabulary and strategies for reading aloud effectively to model fluent reading.

This book is actually really cool for learning how to read better. It has all these fun poems, rhymes, and activities that don’t feel like studying at all. The “Tick Tock” and “Snack Attack” ones were my favorite — I kept reading them out loud just because they sounded funny! I liked how it tells you to read with expression and even act things out. It’s kinda nice how it mixes songs, games, and reading, so you don’t get bored. The drawings and ideas are cute too — like the “All by Myself” poem made me think of what I can do alone. It’s one of those books that actually makes reading fun instead of just another subject to finish.
